The Porsche 956 had dominated endurance racing in the eighties and became one of the most successful racing cars of all time. European championships had been entered and won but Porsche wanted a piece of the North American championship series. However, to be eligible Porsche had to adapt their cars design as the IMSA GT Championship regulations stated that the drivers feet could not extend past the front axle. This lead to the birth of the Porsche 962C
From this starting point Porsche not only stretched the wheelbase but also implemented their famous PDK gearbox as well as optimise their flat six turbo engine. The much used and highly efficient ground effect which was first developed in the 956 was carried over to the 962C with great success.
Initial testing proved tricky due to the changes made to the car but in the end all of Porsches research and development paid off as the 962C went on to became the most successful sports car in history. Porsche’s objective of competing in the IMSA GT Championship was achieved and with 54 victories overall the brief was certainly met.
This car chassis N° 174 was sold new to BO Strandell Race Team in November 1990. Having never raced, it spent time at automobile demonstrations until January 1992 where it was sold to its second owner an Italian who kept it for 22 years. In December 2013 it changed ownership again to another Italian owner. Finally in 2015 it was sold to the current owners who in late 2019 had it cosmetically restored by Boutsen Ginion Racing. Now it is back up for sale for the next person to continue its legacy.
Under the bonnet you will find a 3,0L water cooled flat six engine (No. 956/201) and an original Porsche 962C gearbox (No. 956 01 067).
